MMPAD Munich Meeting Report
MEETING REPORT 12 European Roadshow - Friday 25 th May, 2018 Munich, Germany Avoiding late complications According to the results of the LinKöping study on diabetes complications, optimum glycaemic control, monitored by HbA1c levels, has a central role in avoiding late diabetes complications. The HbA1c value is considered a surrogate marker for the risk of developing complications . 14 However, it is important not to completely rely on HbA1c values, and to improve patients’ motivation in controlling their own glucose levels and symptoms, they should be made aware of other indicators like LDL- cholesterol and blood pressure too. Too often statins and antihypertensive drugs are initially prescribed by colleagues in internal medicine, Raile mentioned. Twenty- four hour blood pressure monitoring and ultrasound of the kidneys and renal vessels should be performed at least once to rule out organ-associated hypertension. Obesity should also be addressed early on in type 1 diabetes, as it a risk factor for hypertension.
